I’ll be the first person to tell you that therapy works. I have a lot of faith in this statement and truly believe in the strength and resilience of the human spirit. But let’s be perfectly clear. There are no instant fixes when it comes to mental health wellness. Even medications can take several weeks to reach a therapeutic level. Not to mention that many come with plenty of negative side effects. I believe that part of my job as a mental health counselor is to help manage expectations for my clients. Not a small feat when we’re bombarded with ads and media that “guarantee” fast and/or instant relief, results, etc. Oh, and by the way, counseling is hard work, regardless of the therapeutic modality you choose. I wish there were a magic wand that could “fix it and make it all better.” I’d be out of work, but the world would be a much easier place to live in. I guess what I’m saying is this...If you’re hurting, and make the choice to see a counselor...please please please...do your homework, be ready to dig deep, and understand that all good things take time. Growth and change are hard work. Healing is hard work. Therapy is hard work, but it’s worth it. Your wellness is worth it. Your happiness is worth it. You’re worth it. (re)Treat Yourself Well.
